What is the difference between domain extensions?
It’s a bit confusing for many users and even for some web developers sometimes, which domain should i buy?! Should i go with mycompanyname.com or mycompanyname.net?!! Are they really different or it’s just a name?
What does domain extensions stand for?
Each extension stands for special type of business, when the internet started in the 50s it was very limited and the number of websites was very much less than that we have today
- .com is the short of (Commercial) and it was meant to be registered by general business
- .net is the short of (Network) originally it was created for the major communication business such as mobile network companies.
- .org is the short of (Organization) and it was meant for non-profit organizations.
- .info is the short of (Information) this basically was for information websites about product, brand, or company.
- .us / .qa / .my is short of the associated country name, (USA, Qatar, Malaysia..)

When to use each of the domain extensions?
If you are registering your domain for new company or brand, make sure you go for the .com domains even if your website is not a commercial website 100% but for some reason the .com domains become the most public domains and Google archive it very quickly.
Second best is the .net domains, for some reason the .net domains didn’t get as popular as expected for the purpose it was created for but for some reason business owners start using it as the second option when the .com is not available, it's almost as good, but needs a bit of extra time to get the same SEO results.Second best is the .net domains, for some reason the .net domains didn’t get as popular as expected for the purpose it was created for but for some reason business owners start using it as the second option when the .com is not available, it's almost as good, but needs a bit of extra time to get the same SEO results.
The .org domains, is as it refers good for organizations, but that does not mean that you can't buy it if you are a commercial type of company. it's the best description for your business maybe but there is nothing wrong in it and definitely there is nothing not ethical in getting it.
I wish if i could say that the .info is the best thing for you to rank for your business / brand but this extension was completely burned by Godaddy for quit good time, by offering it with the cheapest $0.99 this is when all the lower quality content makers, spammers and hackers got this domain extension in boundels. now Google don't really like it and keep it somewhere deep down in the rank.
Still it's very good option if you need to test, upload a demo or any content that you are not really feeling safe uploading it directly to your .com / .net domain.
What about the countries extension?
There are 2 major cases in my personal point of view in this case, the first one is when you are trying to cry out loud that your business, product or services is a local one. or when you have a different website theme for different countries, in this case it's really great to go for your targeted country domain extension and book it asap.
On the other hand, if it's not needed or you are just trying to book to have a specialized domain one of the best example that i can think of is the google short domain (goo.gl). in this case i'm not pro this idea, as you may lose your domain for may reasons most of it is related to geopolitical ones.
At the end you may book any domain you think is the best for you, your business and for your marketing plan what matters the most is how much you are using it and the quality of this usage.
